Label / history
“Strozzavolpe” literally means “fox’s throat” and evokes a wild animal tamed by an experienced hand. The name also refers to an Italian fable in which a clever fox escapes from hunters and hides, only to be caught in traps laid overnight by a prince.
The Bigi family’s winemaking history began in 1880 with Luigi Bigi. The estate was once owned by the La Trinita monastery and occupies a picturesque hilltop site of volcanic origin. Viticulture around Orvieto dates back to the Etruscans; the first written evidence dates from 1292, and the “Guardians of the Vineyards” committee was established three years later to protect vine quality. Local winemaking developments included a network of underground galleries and the practice of pressing grapes at ground level.
