Vineyard and terroir

Brunello is produced exclusively from estate-grown grapes selected by hand in Biondi-Santi's high-altitude vineyards. The 2020 originated from a precise selection of Sangiovese grown in identified parcels of the proprietary vineyards.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese Grosso. The wine's origins lie in the nineteenth-century work of Clemente Santi and Ferruccio Biondi Santi with barrel-aged, single-varietal Sangiovese Grosso wines in Montalcino.

Vinification

The established approach uses cement vats and indigenous yeasts. For the 2020 vintage, vinification took place across oak casks, concrete and stainless-steel vessels, exclusively with indigenous yeasts originating in the estate vineyards.

Ageing

The 2020 matured for 24 months in traditional large Slavonian oak casks.

Technical data

The 2020 contains 13.5% alcohol. Harvest began on 9 September 2020.

Tasting profile

The 2020 combines classical proportions with pronounced finesse. Fresh cherry, redcurrant and pomegranate form the aromatic core, interlaced with rose petal, violet, wild herbs, orange zest and Asian spices. Crisp acidity brings movement to the palate, while sculpted tannins provide structure and energy.

Vintage notes

A mild, dry winter and above-average temperatures preceded a cool spring in 2020. Large day-to-night temperature changes and an exceptional snowfall on 26 March caused little vineyard damage because budbreak was delayed. Rain in June replenished soil water reserves. July and August were very warm and dry, but continuing diurnal temperature variation supported vine balance and aromatic development. Refreshing rainfall arrived at the end of August shortly before harvest.

Label / history

Brunello di Montalcino traces its origins to Clemente Santi and his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi. The first historic Brunello vintage was produced in 1888. The wine is the Tenuta Greppo flagship and represents a style built around freshness, elegance, depth and long ageing capacity.
