Vineyard and terroir
Rosso is traditionally drawn from Tenuta Greppo's youngest vines and from vineyard plots chosen to emphasize fruit. Its identity reflects the freshness of the estate's high-altitude vineyards. The 2023 was made from a careful selection of grapes grown in proprietary vineyards.
Grapes
Sangiovese.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in cement vats. The difficult 2023 season demanded extremely careful fruit selection because of downy-mildew pressure in the vineyards.
Ageing
The 2023 matured for 12 months in Slavonian oak casks. This shorter oak élevage distinguishes Rosso's production from that of Brunello.
Technical data
The 2023 contains 13.5% alcohol. Harvest began on 13 September 2023.
Tasting profile
The 2023 is lively, flavourful and immediately appealing. Its sharply defined bouquet presents very fresh cherry and strawberry, delicate flowers and a suggestion of citrus. Vibrant acidity and polished, integrated tannins sustain a supple and balanced progression. A bright, clean-edged palate creates tension through an impressively long finish. The overall expression is elegant, direct, deep and distinctive.
The wine is designed to combine fruit-led accessibility in youth with sufficient freshness and structure to develop with age.
Vintage notes
The 2023 growing season featured pronounced temperature changes and irregular rainfall. A warm autumn and mild winter, including occasional January snow, led into a cool, wet spring. Temperatures fell sharply in April, and frequent rain continued until the middle of June. Summer began with increasing heat and humidity; showers in early August offered partial relief before temperatures rose again. Late-August rain and strong day-to-night temperature variation then created favourable ripening conditions.
Label / history
The wine was originally called Biondi-Santi Brunello “White Label.” It adopted its present identity in 1983, when the Rosso di Montalcino DOC was established. Within the range it serves as a fruitier, earlier-drinking introduction to the Brunello style.
