Vineyard and terroir

Vigna Santa Rosalia is a 1.2659 ha west-facing vineyard in Alba at 300 m. The vines were planted in 2004 at 4,000 plants/ha, with 1 × 2.5 m spacing. They are trained to a vertical canopy and pruned by traditional Guyot. Rootstocks are K5BB and 420 A, and the approximate yield is 7,000 kg/ha.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo, combining the Lampia and Michet subvarieties.

Vinification

Fermentation and maceration last 6–8 days. The wine is then held at 18–20°C for malolactic fermentation. The process is directed toward preserving Nebbiolo’s freshness and elegance.

Ageing

In December, the wine is transferred to large Slovenian oak barrels for one year. It subsequently spends approximately one year in bottle, by which point its aromatic profile is considered ready for drinking.

Tasting profile

A medium-bodied Nebbiolo shaped by the soil and climate of Santa Rosalia and by restrained vinification. Its primary aromas center on peach and berries. The 2022 is broader and more mature in expression, with dark spice, violet, black-skinned fruit and camphor, followed by dried cherry, prune, liquorice and mature orange rind. Taut, enveloping tannins frame the palate.

Serving and pairing

Pair with light dishes or summer fare. Although it ages well, its freshness and fruit are best enjoyed relatively young; the 2022 is recommended through 2027.
