Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes originate at Castelvecchio in Sagrado, within the Carso area of the province of Gorizia. Its arid, rocky Karst soil carries a shallow layer of red sand and is rich in iron and limestone. The site is constantly ventilated and influenced by the nearby sea.
Grapes
100% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, an old Friulian variety.
Vinification
The wine spends its first four months in stainless-steel tanks, completing malolactic fermentation and encouraging tartrate precipitation.
Ageing
Maturation continues for one year in French and Californian oak barriques of 225, 350 and 550 L. This is followed by one year in larger Slavonian and French oak barrels of 750, 1,500 and 2,500 L, then four to six months in bottle before release.
Technical data
Available formats are 750 ml, 1.5 L, 3 L and 5 L.
Tasting profile
Deep, intense ruby red. The nose is ethereal and lightly vinous, with an individual character and pleasant wild-fruit aromas. Dry and full-bodied on the palate, it has a rounded texture and a subtly bitter edge. The introductory description presents it as initially ungainly but transformed by prolonged barrel and bottle maturation.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–20 °C. Roasts and game are the principal matches, alongside other robust dishes from Friulian cuisine.
