Vineyard and terroir
Bussia Dardi le Rose. The vines were planted between 1970 and 1985, and the vineyard contains substantial variations in soil. Harvesting is described as taking place in Roncaglie through six or seven successive passes, with each pass determined by grape ripeness and quality.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and pressed. Skin maceration lasts 12–15 days at a maximum temperature of approximately 30 °C. Full malolactic fermentation is completed before winter.
Ageing
In spring, the wine is transferred to oak barrels for 24–28 months. The Riserva does not receive a longer period in wood than Barolo Bussia Dardi le Rose: extended bottle maturation is used instead to preserve freshness and harmony while bringing the wine to a balanced, ready-to-drink stage. Bottle-ageing time is adapted to the needs of each vintage; the 2015 spent 42 months in bottle.
Technical data
Alcohol is 13–14% vol., total acidity 5–5.5 g/L and dry extract 27–30 g/L. Production is limited to wine drawn from the cask considered the finest.
Tasting profile
Intense garnet red. The broad, elegant bouquet is gently spicy, with dried flowers, sweet spiced fruit and incense. The palate is opulent and powerful yet harmonious, supported by soft tannins and layered with ripe fruit and liquorice. The wine combines substantial structure with complexity and has outstanding ageing potential.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–19 °C.
Vintage notes
The Riserva is made only in particularly successful vintages. The 2015 vintage received 42 months of bottle maturation after its period in oak.
Label / history
