Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The estate’s vineyards lie near Orvieto, within the oldest production area for Orvieto Classico, at 320 m above sea level. The soils consist of clay and marl rich in fossilized Miocene seashells. Their exposure and frequent winds create a distinctive local microclimate. The soil and vines are tended exclusively with biological methods.
Label / history
The name Decugnano has been documented for at least eight centuries. A thirteenth-century document records the Catholic Church’s ownership of the Santa Maria Decugnano vineyard, while archaeological findings trace winegrowing at the site to Etruscan times. Claudio Barbi purchased the vineyard in 1973, and the first Decugnano dei Barbi wines went on sale in 1978 after five years of work.
