Vineyard and terroir
Most of the grapes come from the Martiena vineyard, directly in front of the winery, so the fruit can be transported quickly after harvest. The organic vineyards lie 300–350 metres above sea level. The soil is tuff with sedimentary rock, which brings out the fruit character of Sangiovese and makes the wine very enjoyable even when young.
Grapes
Sangiovese grown in the Montepulciano area must make up at least 70% of the blend. The remainder is other red varieties, particularly Canaiolo and Merlot.
Vinification
The grapes are gently pressed, then fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks at a controlled 26–28 °C. Maceration on the skins lasts 10–14 days, with regular pumping over.
Ageing
The wine is aged in steel tanks and, after bottling, in the bottle.
Label / history
Maria Caterina Dei Rosso di Montepulciano is the youngest red wine of the Dei estate and is made in limited quantities. The estate owns 4 plots totalling 100 hectares in Montepulciano, and one third of its land, in the best locations, is planted with vines. It bottled its first wine, Vino Nobile Montepulciano, in 1985.
