Questo vino
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks in contact with the skins and lasts 20–25 days.
Ageing
The wine is aged for 12 months in 500 L and 35 hL oak barrels.
Tasting profile
Fruit-forward, broad and generous in style, more approachable than the estate's flagship, Castello di Bolgheri. The tannin structure is less firm than that of Castello di Bolgheri. Expressive and uncompromising, and unaffected by passing wine trends.
Vintage notes
The 2022 vintage is expected to remain at its peak through 2029.
Label / history
Named after Baroness Varvara Wrangel, wife of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca and grandmother of Countess Franca Spalletti Trivelli. First released in 2005, it grew from the winemakers' wish to make a more approachable, fruit-forward wine with a broad, generous style. It was once described as the estate's "younger" wine, but since the 2008 vintage many experts have agreed it can no longer be considered a "second" wine.
