Vineyard and terroir
Le Cupole is the Second Vin of Tenuta di Trinoro. Its fruit comes from younger estate vineyards on deeper soils at 450–600 m in Val d’Orcia. In 2023, 41 parcels were brought to the cellar and handled separately.
Grapes
Blend proportions change with every vintage. The latest published vintage, 2023, is 41% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Merlot contributes plush, silky texture, while Cabernet Franc gives fragrant vibrancy.
Vinification
The 2023 parcels fermented in stainless-steel tanks for 10–15 days at controlled temperature. The final blend was selected after tasting the parcels following the waxing moon in February 2024.
Ageing
The separate parcels spent 8 months in 225-litre barriques of different ages. After blending, the wine refined for another 12 months in cement tanks. The general wine description characterizes the barrels as one to three years old.
Technical data
IGT Toscana. The vineyards lie at 450–600 m a.s.l.
Tasting profile
Le Cupole is velvety and approachable, with exuberant, fleshy and bright fruit, rich colour and extracted yet soft tannins. Balsamic notes shape the aroma. The 2023 wines are described as particularly explosive and exuberant.
Vintage notes
The 2023 season opened with substantial January snow and a wet winter that replenished water reserves. Temperatures rose in March and started growth early, before spring cold abruptly slowed the vines. Mild conditions and weekly rain persisted through the first half of June; 500 mm fell during spring and early summer, and downy mildew demanded continuous vineyard work. Hot weather arrived at the end of June and regularly exceeded 30°C until mid-September. Green harvesting reduced the load in late July, while foliage was retained to shade the bunches. Merlot harvest began on 18 September. Cabernet Franc was picked on 4–6 October, Petit Verdot on 17 October and Cabernet Sauvignon on 19 October, generally during the coolest hours and sometimes before sunrise. It was one of the warmest Octobers on record, with good yields despite the turbulent season.
Label / history
First produced in 1995, Le Cupole is the estate’s second wine and uses the same four red varieties as Tenuta di Trinoro.
