Vineyard and terroir
The estate’s premier wine is assembled from as many as 50 distinct vineyard parcels in Val d’Orcia. Selection changes with the character of each growing season rather than following a fixed recipe. The 2022 fact sheet places the vineyards at 400–650 m on clay soils; the wine page gives a narrower altitude of 450–600 m. The broader estate description also associates the wine with limestone, alluvial-plain and clay soils.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2022): 44% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot returned to the blend in 2022 for the first time since 2015.
Vinification
In 2022, every one of the 50 parcels was harvested by hand and handled separately. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for 10–15 days.
Ageing
The separate lots spent 8 months in 225 L barriques of various ages, followed by 12 months in concrete. The wine was bottled during the waning moon in early March 2024.
Technical data
Production of the 2022 vintage was 8,483 bottles.
Tasting profile
The 2022 combines intense red-fruit character with the texture and aromas associated with thick summer-grown skins. September rain brought renewed freshness. Fragrant fruit, integrated tannins and a restrained spicy accent lead to a dynamic, persistent and savoury finish. The wine is gentle yet vibrant, lively and radiant in youth, with the structure to develop further.
More generally, Tenuta di Trinoro is defined by richness, structure, depth and complexity, expressing both the estate’s remote Tuscan terroir and the changing quality of its four Bordeaux varieties.
Vintage notes
The dry 2022 season followed an already arid 2021. The vines moderated their vigour, while careful canopy management and bunch selection reduced the burden on plants facing limited water. Picking initially appeared likely to begin early, but concentrated September downpours slowed the final ripening phase. Merlot reached the cellar in late September, followed by Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot achieved full maturity unusually early, at the beginning of October. The resulting wines showed freshness, verticality, pronounced bouquets and crisp fruit.
Label / history
Tenuta di Trinoro is the estate’s flagship, or Premier Vin. Its identity is deliberately vintage-specific: the four available varieties and numerous parcels are selected anew each year, without predetermined proportions or a fixed flavour profile.
