Vineyard and terroir
Montersino lies among the southernmost hills of the Barbaresco denomination, in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, a hamlet of Alba. The vineyard stands at approximately 300 m a.s.l. and faces south. Its technical soil description is bluish marl with a calcareous matrix; the broader cru account also refers to clay-limestone soils crossed by sandy veins. The nearby Canyon di Langa, the Rocche dei Sette Fratelli, contributes to the site’s microclimate. Altitude and exposure encourage slow, even Nebbiolo ripening, while the soils shape finesse and depth.
The vines are Guyot trained.
Grapes
Nebbiolo.
Vinification
The grapes are picked manually in October, destemmed and crushed. Maceration and fermentation take place in temperature-controlled tanks at 25–26°C for approximately three weeks, with daily pump-overs. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation follows.
Ageing
At least 12 months in oak vessels.
Tasting profile
Garnet red. The nose is complex and refined, combining small red berries, dried rose, sweet spices and light balsamic notes. Elegant and harmonious on the palate, with silky tannins and a long aromatic persistence. It is enjoyable in youth and can also age well, acquiring further complexity.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C. Pair with grilled beef fillet, rosemary lamb, stews or braised dishes. It also complements medium-aged cheeses such as toma piemontese or sweet Gorgonzola, as well as porcini risotto and autumn vegetable soups or purées.
