Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the municipality of La Morra, at 480 m above sea level. The vineyards face south and southwest and have calcareous-clay soils. The vines are trained to Guyot. Freisa, once widespread in the Langhe, is now comparatively rare after Nebbiolo expanded for Barolo and Barbaresco production; this wine preserves the variety’s connection with the area’s traditions and roots.
Grapes
Freisa. The bunches undergo rigorous selection.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested manually in the second half of September, then destemmed and crushed. Maceration takes place in temperature-controlled tanks at 25–26°C for 10–12 days, with daily pump-overs, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
Maturation takes place in oak vessels of different capacities. Bottle ageing brings further complexity.
Tasting profile
The wine has substantial structure and elegant varietal tannins. The wine page describes a garnet-red colour tending toward cherry red, while the technical sheet calls it intense ruby red. Red berries, raspberry and rose mingle with spice on the wine page; the technical sheet adds tobacco and pepper, with a floral rose note emerging after aeration. The palate is elegant, enveloping and persistent, with soft yet pronounced tannins, substantial body and a smooth, persuasive finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C. Pair with slowly cooked meat dishes or mature hard cheeses.
