Vineyard and terroir
The Aglianico is grown according to organic principles on the volcanic soils of Monte Vulture, where pockets of clay add a subtle mineral note. The vineyards lie at around 650 m and face south and southeast, giving warm sunshine by day and cool nights. This brings lively acidity, a firm structure and expressive berry aromas. The climate is continental, with cold, snowy winters, warm summers and sharp differences between day and night temperatures, which add freshness, minerality and a distinctive structure.
The grapes come from vineyards in the commune of Barile.
Grapes
Made entirely from Aglianico.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in September and gently pressed. Fermentation lasts 12 days in steel tanks, which preserves a clean fruit character and light texture.
Ageing
The wine ages for 6 months in steel tanks and a further 6 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Bright, lively and fresh, with plenty of fruit, expressive berry aromas and a soft structure. Lively acidity is balanced against juicy fruit. A subtle mineral note runs through it. The profile is harmonious and soft, light yet energetic.
Serving and pairing
Suited to light dinners and get-togethers in spring and summer, and to everyday drinking.
Vintage notes
The 2024 vintage is intended to be enjoyed over the next few years.
Label / history
Elena Fucci launched the "Verha" project in 2022 to offer fresh, approachable wines for everyday drinking while preserving the character of the area and its terroir. The project also has a social purpose. The Barile vineyards belonged to neighbouring farmers, not to the company. Before the COVID pandemic these farmers sold their grapes to private buyers, mainly from Campania, who made garagiste-style wine. During and after the pandemic those buyers stopped operating, and the farmers were unsure where to sell. To support local winegrowing and save the plots, the vineyards were purchased and a new project was developed, focused on wine quality and care for the terroir.
"Verha" means "wine" in the Arbëresh dialect, spoken by descendants of the Albanian community that settled in Barile in the XV century. The name reflects the connection to local culture, history and winemaking traditions, and to Elena Fucci's own roots.
7,000 bottles of the 2024 vintage were made.
