Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from four neighbouring plots on Monte Vulture, planted with vines more than 70 years old in volcanic soils. These vineyards belonged to friends of Elena Fucci’s grandfather and were at risk of being abandoned. The old vines give small yields of concentrated fruit. Altitude and cool nights moderate the southern warmth and help preserve acidity.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted to keep the berries intact. Maceration lasts two weeks, followed by fermentation in stainless steel.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in new 500-litre tonneaux and then rests for a further six months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Expressive and refined, with delicate mineral character, clean fruit, subtle spice and oak notes. The palate is fresh and balanced, with depth, a dense yet velvety texture, softness and roundness, finely restrained tannins and restrained power. The structure remains unheavy.
Label / history
“SCEG”, pronounced “sheg”, means “pomegranate” in the Arbëresh dialect of Albanian spoken by Italians of Albanian descent. The name reflects Elena Fucci’s roots and those of her family while paying tribute to a disappearing culture.
