Vineyard and terroir

The Nebbiolo comes from vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba with southern and southwestern exposures. The vines are 20–30 years old and grow in clay-limestone soil, with a reported yield of 8,000 kg/ha. They are Guyot trained and managed under sustainable-viticulture practices.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

The crop is harvested entirely by hand. Whole bunches are manually selected on a vibrating table, then chilled with carbonic snow to limit oxidation and substantially reduce the use of sulphur. After destemming, the berries pass through a second manual selection on another vibrating table before gentle crushing. The handling line does not use screw conveyors, allowing the fruit to be moved as delicately as possible.

The must is cooled and partly undergoes cold maceration before controlled-temperature fermentation in stainless-steel vats and conical oak vats. Maceration lasts more than 28 days and combines délestage with partial use of the traditional submerged-cap technique.

Ageing

The wine matures in wood for a total of 28 months, divided between tonneaux and medium-sized 2,500-litre barrels.

Technical data

The 2020 vintage has 14.5% alcohol by volume. The wine is dry, full-bodied and markedly shaped by oak maturation. Paolo Giacosa is the winemaker.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red with garnet highlights. The broad, intense and complex bouquet combines blackberry, liquorice, tobacco, spices, coffee bean and faded rose, with a clearly recognizable Nebbiolo character. The palate is expansive and multifaceted: dry, full-bodied, elegant and harmonious, with plentiful fine tannins and a long, pleasant finish. Aromas and palate are closely aligned.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18 °C. Pair with game, roasts and mature cheeses, or enjoy after dinner. Cellaring potential is 15–20 years.

Vintage notes

The 2020 season began with a mild winter, followed by fine, relatively dry weather in March and April. Rain in May and June slowed vegetative development, after which conditions returned to balance. The wider harvest began on 21 August with Alta Langa. Ripening of Barbera and Nebbiolo slowed before resuming during the second half of September; Nebbiolo reached harvest in optimal condition. The resulting wines are characterized by intense, elegant aromas and strong balance.

Label / history

Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is conceived as a contemporary interpretation of the area's traditional Barolo, retaining the longevity, austerity and complexity associated with its origin.
