Vineyard and terroir

Carpegna MGA lies in Serralunga d’Alba and comprises cadastral parcels Foglio 2, Particelle 25, 362 and 984. The vines face south and southwest, average 35 years of age and are Guyot trained. The clay-limestone site has comparatively young soils derived from Sant’Agata Fossil Marls. This terroir produces a more open and approachable expression of Barolo than wines from other vineyards in the same area. Sustainable viticulture is practiced, and the stated yield is 6,500 kg/ha.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested entirely by hand. Whole bunches are manually sorted on a vibrating table and chilled with carbonic snow, limiting oxidation while substantially reducing the need for sulphur. Following destemming, the berries pass over a second manual sorting table and are softly crushed. Screw conveyors are excluded from the handling process to minimize mechanical stress.

The must is cooled and partly cold-macerated before controlled-temperature fermentation in stainless-steel tanks and conical oak vats. Extraction combines délestage with partial submerged-cap management. Two durations are given for the 2019 wine: more than 18 days and more than 28 days.

Ageing

Two maturation specifications are given for the 2019 wine: approximately 25 months in oak casks of different capacities, and approximately 28 months in medium-sized 2,400-litre oak casks.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red with light garnet reflections. The broad, intense and complex bouquet combines blackberry and other small fruits with liquorice, violet, tobacco, spices, coffee bean and faded-rose nuances. The palate is dry, full-bodied and persistent, with breadth and complexity, fine yet substantial tannins, minerality and freshness. Elegance and harmony carry through a long finish, with the structure to develop further in bottle.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18 °C with hunting game, roasts or mature cheeses. It can also be enjoyed after dinner.

Vintage notes

The 2019 growing season began slowly after a prolonged winter. Rain in April and cool conditions in May restored a more traditional seasonal rhythm. Heat in June and July, together with water reserves in the soil, encouraged rapid vegetative growth. August was mild with beneficial rainfall, and harvest began on a regular schedule. The grapes were healthy, with slightly above-average acidity; the red varieties also showed high anthocyanin accumulation and an excellent polyphenolic profile.
