Vineyard and terroir
The Cortese grows in Rovereto, in the commune of Gavi, at 200–300 m above sea level on southeast- and southwest-facing slopes. The soils are sandy marl, and the vineyards' proximity to the sea gives the grapes a distinctive freshness and aromatic character. The vines are trained on the Guyot system.
Vinification
Harvest is generally in mid-September. After gentle pressing, the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks at 18–20 °C to preserve freshness and natural fruit character. The must is cooled and left to settle statically before fermentation.
Ageing
The wine spends 2–3 months on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks, which gives it a soft, creamy texture. It is then stabilised and bottled. It gains balance and depth of flavour over time. The 2024 vintage is expected to show its full potential from 2025 to 2028.
Tasting profile
Vibrant, zesty and full-flavoured. The nose is intensely floral, with notes of flowers, apples and citrus fruit. The palate is mineral and juicy, with a soft, creamy texture. The freshness is youthful.
Serving and pairing
Suited to an aperitif or a summer-evening drink, though it can be enjoyed in any season.
Label / history
The wine belongs to "The Stripes", Fontanafredda's core range, which has distinctive striped labels. The range was created to show the widest possible selection of Piedmont wines. It consists mainly of single-varietal wines from specific municipal appellations or individual vineyards.
