Vineyard and terroir
The Riserva is produced from selected fruit grown in the Villa Grande single vineyard at the Greppone Mazzi estate in Montalcino. The estate has 25 hectares of vineyards divided between two areas: Greppi, with steep slopes, and Le Logge in the southern part of the appellation. Villa Grande lies between 250 and 450 metres above sea level and faces southwest. Its soils range from clay loam to loam and contain abundant shale and limestone.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese Grosso, known locally as Brunello.
Vinification
For the 2019 vintage, carefully selected grapes were harvested from early to mid-October. Alcoholic fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. A long post-fermentation maceration followed at 28–29°C and lasted more than 20 days.
Ageing
The wine matured for approximately 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks. After blending, it received an extended period of bottle maturation.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with garnet hues. The complex bouquet combines cherry, raspberry and flowers with tobacco, cedar and wild herbs. The palate is rich, linear and elegant, finishing with freshness, savoury persistence and a prolonged aftertaste.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C.
Vintage notes
The 2019 growing season followed a regular pattern. A mild winter and rainfall established useful soil-water reserves, helping the vines through a hot, dry summer without extreme heat peaks.
Label / history
First produced in 1979, Greppone Mazzi Riserva is conceived as a single-vineyard selection of Sangiovese Grosso and as the estate’s Riserva expression of Brunello di Montalcino.
