Storia
Ancient origins
Vines were first planted on the lower slopes of Mount Etna more than two thousand years ago.
The I Vigneri guild
In 1435, a guild of vine-growers called I Vigneri was founded in Catania. Its main goals were to respect the land and nature, grow authentic grape varieties, and protect the environment. I Custodi grows its vines according to the traditional practices of this guild, and every bottle it produces carries the I Vigneri symbol along with the year of the guild's founding.
Terroir
The vineyards lie on the lower slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. The grapes are warmed by the hot Sicilian sun and cooled by mountain winds, which allows them to ripen slowly and evenly.
Vinificazione
The vineyards are farmed organically without the use of chemicals. Mules are used to help work the vineyard, and all grapes are harvested by hand. Cultivation follows the traditional practices of the I Vigneri guild, founded in Catania in 1435, which emphasizes respect for the land and nature, the growing of authentic grape varieties, and protection of the environment.
I Custodi describes itself as a protector and caretaker of its Etna vineyards, aiming to create distinctive wines that bring together ancient traditions, respect for nature, and modern technology. The wines are intended to express the character and potential of their terroir. Every bottle carries the I Vigneri symbol and the year the guild was founded, marking its adherence to the guild's traditional practices.
Filosofia
I Custodi holds that it acts as a protector and caretaker of the ancient vineyards on Mount Etna's lower slopes. It aims to create distinctive wines that bring together ancient traditions, respect for nature, and modern technology, and states that its wines express the character and potential of their terroir.
