Vineyard and terroir

After selecting the vines destined for the Riserva, the best remaining grapes from two distinct pedoclimatic areas are used for this Brunello. Pinino lies in northern Montalcino at 284.2 m above sea level, with southeast exposure and stony soil containing galestro and alberese. Canchi is northeast of Montalcino at 318.2 m, also facing southeast; its soil is predominantly clay with silt. The vines are trained to spurred cordon.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese Grosso.

Vinification

Harvest ran from 21 September to 2 October. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with 18–25 days of skin maceration.

Ageing

At least 30 months in oak casks and barriques.

Technical data

The wine page reports 14% alcohol, whereas the 2020 fact sheet reports 14.5%. Total acidity is 5 g/L and dry extract 30.2 g/L. Production totalled 30,000 bottles. The fact sheet includes 750 ml and 1,500 ml formats; the page shows only 750 ml.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red. Blackberry and plum aromas mingle with spicy nuances. The palate is velvety, full-bodied and smooth.

Vintage notes

A colder-than-average winter preceded a fairly warm spring with rainfall around normal levels. June was relatively wet, allowing regular vine development and harmonious berry growth, while the remainder of summer was comparatively dry. September brought substantial day–night temperature variation and significant rain. The resulting later harvest delivered grapes with balanced technological and phenolic maturity and a notable aromatic component.
