Vineyard and terroir

The grapes are grown at Tenuta La Garzaia in the Le Sondraie area, on the northern edge of the Bolgheri appellation. The vineyards lie at 10 m above sea level on soils containing abundant clay and limestone with small percentages of silt.

Grapes

The 2023 blend is 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot.

Vinification

Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, supported by periodic pump-overs and délestage. Skin maceration lasts approximately 21 days. Malolactic fermentation is completed before the wine enters oak.

Ageing

The wine matures for 18 months in French oak barriques, divided between 70% new oak and 30% second-use barrels.

Technical data

Vintage: 2023. Alcohol: 15.5%.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red. The complex bouquet combines Mediterranean scrub with ripe red fruit. The palate is balanced and full-bodied, with plush tannins. Merlot supplies smoothness and roundness, while Cabernet Franc contributes body, structure and aromatic complexity. The finish is persistent and invites another taste.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18–20 °C.

Vintage notes

The 2023 growing season brought hot, sunny days and stable conditions. Heavy rain at the end of August replenished water reserves and relieved the vines before further high temperatures. The grapes achieved optimal ripeness.

Label / history

Garzaia is Ruffino’s first Bolgheri Superiore and was conceived by winemaker Olga Fusari. Its name evokes Bolgheri and refers to a nesting place for herons.
