Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from a mix of old and very old vineyards in the hills south of Montalcino. The vineyards lie at different elevations, average 250 m in altitude and receive sunlight until sunset. Vine age is given as 15–20 years. The soils are tuffaceous clay with a high proportion of skeleton, and the vines are trained to a bilateral, balanced cordon.
Grapes
A blend of Sangiovese, Syrah and Merlot.
Vinification
Intensive extraction takes place during the initial stages of fermentation, followed by medium quiescent maceration on the marc. The temperature rises to no more than 30°C before being allowed to fall during the final stage of fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 6 months in Slavonian oak barrels of various sizes, followed by at least 3 months in bottle.
