Vineyard and terroir

A blend assembled from a careful, vintage-dependent selection of vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba. The sites occupy medium and upper slopes at 300–350 m above sea level, face south-west and have Miocene-Helvetian soils with abundant limestone and grey marl alternating with sand.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

Traditional fermentation lasts 12–15 days in stainless-steel vats with a floating cap at a controlled 30–31°C. The wine remains in contact with the skins for another 30–40 days to increase polyphenol extraction and encourage the start of malolactic fermentation. The component wines are blended once malolactic fermentation is complete. Long maceration and few rackings during maturation encourage tertiary aromas to develop before bottling.

Ageing

Two years in medium- and large-capacity oak barrels ranging from 2,000 to 14,000 litres, followed by an additional, unspecified period in bottle before release.

Technical data

Alcohol: 14% vol. Average vineyard yield: 45 hl/ha. Wine yield: 65%. Bottle format: 0.75 L.

Tasting profile

Garnet red of good intensity, with ruby highlights that can acquire a faint orange tone over time. Aromas include nutmeg, bay leaf, black pepper, ripe red fruit and black liquorice; additional notes include vanilla, dried roses and undergrowth. The palate is dry yet soft, full-bodied and velvety, with powerful, harmonious tannins and lively acidity supporting a very long finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C.
