Vineyard and terroir

Massirano is produced from the younger vines of San Cristoforo in Neive. San Cristoforo is an additional geographical mention identifying a particularly prized cru. The site faces south-east and turns through 360° at the crest of the hill, a position locally described as a “Bricco.” The vines are Guyot trained. Yield is restricted to 6,500 kg/ha through severe cluster thinning.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

Harvest normally takes place around mid-October, with timing adjusted to the weather conditions of each season. After crushing, the must ferments in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats at 28–30°C for 10–12 days, with frequent pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation follows before the wine is transferred to oak.

Ageing

The wine matures for 16–18 months in large 25 hl Slavonian oak casks. It continues to develop slowly and steadily in bottle and has an ageing horizon of at least 10–15 years.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red with garnet reflections. Aromas of rose and violet are joined by balsamic and spicy notes. The palate combines marked freshness with soft tannins and an elegant style, finishing warm and enveloping.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 15–16°C. Pair with game, braised beef and substantial traditional Piedmontese meat dishes. It also suits Alba white-truffle preparations, including cardoon flan with fonduta and game-filled ravioli.
