Vineyard and terroir
Bricco Cicchetta is a hilltop vineyard in Madonna di Como with 360° exposure, at 300–340 m a.s.l. Its calcareous-marl and clay soils support vines more than 50 years old, trained to Guyot. Cluster thinning limits the yield to 6,000 kg/ha.
Grapes
100% Barbera.
Vinification
Harvest normally takes place during the final ten days of September. Fermentation proceeds in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats at 28–30°C for about ten days, with several rackings. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine page specifies 12 months in large, 25 hL Slavonian oak barrels. The downloadable technical sheet gives two months in the same type and size of vessel.
Tasting profile
Intense, almost dark ruby red with violet reflections. Ripe fruit leads the concentrated aroma, accompanied by spice, liquorice and vanilla. The palate emphasizes texture and power, with ripe cherry, berries and mineral notes extending through a long, persistent finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 17–18°C. Pair with bollito misto alla piemontese, braised beef, tagliolini with mushroom sauce or other robust Italian dishes.
Ageing potential
A full-bodied wine capable of developing for more than ten years.
