Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from volcanic slopes on Mount Etna, where the Carricante vines are planted at 815–860 metres above sea level. The soils are black, mineral-rich and formed from lava sand.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested and selected by hand, then chilled to 8 °C as soon as they reach the winery. They are lightly crushed and gently pressed to give a light, fresh style. The clarified must ferments at 10–18 °C in large stainless-steel tanks, which helps it keep the grape's distinctive character.
Ageing
The wine stays on its lees until August of the year after the harvest, with regular stirring to preserve its freshness. It is then bottled.
Tasting profile
Fresh and elegant.
Label / history
The name recalls the eruption of Mount Etna that began in 1614 and continued for more than ten years, probably the longest on record, with lava reaching the vineyards. Etna is the largest volcano on the Italian Peninsula. Planeta makes a wine bearing the date 1614 in memory of the event, and almost as if to keep it from happening again.
