Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown in the Dispensa, Gurra and Buonivini vineyards in Menfi and Noto, at elevations of 100–250 metres. Planting density is 4,500 vines per hectare.
Grapes
The blend is led by Nero d’Avola, with Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Vinification
Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah are harvested in early September, followed by Nero d’Avola at the end of the month. The grapes are destemmed and macerated for 10–14 days, then fermented on the skins in stainless-steel tanks at 25 °C.
Ageing
Ageing is completed in February.
Tasting profile
Fresh, vibrant and balanced, with berry and other fruit notes alongside distinctive hints of fragrant spice.
Vintage notes
For the 2010 vintage, heavy rain at the end of autumn 2009 provided favourable conditions for the vines’ winter rest. Winter temperatures remained within the usual range, and spring ended with rainy weather. Conditions stayed fairly cool until mid-summer, before a hot August brought the grapes to full ripeness.
Label / history
The La Segreta range takes its name from the woodland surrounding Planeta’s Ulmo vineyard in the Menfi area.
