Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The Nero d’Avola and Nocera fruit is grown near the sea in Capo Milazzo.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand into 14 kg crates and selected on a sorting table at the winery. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, followed by 14 days of skin contact. The wine is then gently pressed and undergoes malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in 35 hL oak barrels.
Label / history
The name recalls the Mamertines, or “sons of Mars,” soldiers and mercenaries of Agathocles, king of Syracuse. In ancient times they made wine in Capo Milazzo; Pliny wrote about it, and Julius Caesar enjoyed it.
