Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in Puglia on rich red clay and limestone soils. The warm Mediterranean climate and sea breezes help the bunches ripen evenly, giving a balance of acidity and ripeness. Masca del Tacco's vineyards, which Poggio Le Volpi expanded through the acquisition, lie around Veglie and Torricella.
Vinification
The wine is made by the appassimento method, with the fruit partially dried on the vines. This concentrates sugars and aromatic compounds. The grapes are carefully selected, then given controlled fermentation and extended skin contact, for rich colour and a balanced tannin structure.
Tasting profile
Elegant, with a deep, expressive character. The colour is rich and the tannin structure balanced.
Label / history
Masca del Tacco is housed in a building that once held the Municipal Cooperative of Erchie Producers, established in 1949. Felice Mergè, following the experience of his father Armando, bought and renovated it in 2010 and renamed it Masca del Tacco. He equipped it with modern facilities and introduced production methods meant to improve quality without changing the wines' traditional character.
