Lazio in breve

It is above all white wine country — more than 70 per cent of production — built on Malvasia, 30 per cent of the vineyards, and Trebbiano, 28. Frascati, Colli Albani and Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone, named after a medieval legend of a bishop's servant marking the inns with good wine, are its best-known whites; Cesanese, grown in the hills of Frosinone, is its native red. In 2022 Lazio made a little over 1.4 million hectolitres from 20,400 hectares, about half of it at DOC level.

The region has three DOCGs. Frascati Superiore and the sweet Cannellino di Frascati come from the Castelli Romani; Cesanese del Piglio from the slopes of the Monti Ernici. Alongside them are 27 mostly little-known DOCs and six IGPs.
