Vineyard and terroir
Podernovi comes from its namesake 3 ha vineyard in Montalcino, Siena, at 450 m above sea level. The site faces south-east and has mineral-rich soil with abundant galestro and a substantial clay component. Planted in 1990, the vines are trained to spur-pruned cordon at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. Yield is 34 hl/ha.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2020): 100% Sangiovese. The fruit is carefully selected and harvested by hand into small 17 kg crates.
Vinification
After meticulous berry selection, the grapes undergo gentle crushing. Fermentation takes place in 25 hl truncated-conical Slavonian oak vats at 28–30°C and lasts 28–30 days. The 2020 vintage received extended maceration for more than one month. Malolactic fermentation is completed in 40 hl casks.
Ageing
The wine matures for 30 months in lightly toasted 40 hl Slavonian oak vessels, followed by at least six months in bottle before release.
Technical data
The 2020 has 14.5% alcohol, total acidity of 6.3 g/L, pH 3.51, residual sugar of 1.4 g/L and net dry extract of 34.8 g/L. Available formats are 750 ml, 1.5 L and 3 L.
Tasting profile
The colour is moderately intense ruby red with subtle garnet reflections. Floral aromas of violet, cyclamen and jasmine meet fresh fruit and spice. The palate is balanced, with good structure and acidity, polished tannins and excellent persistence.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C in large balloon glasses and uncork one hour beforehand.
Vintage notes
A mild, dry winter led to early budbreak in 2020. A return of cold weather and some April snow temporarily slowed vine growth, followed by vigorous flowering. The hot, relatively dry summer restrained vegetative development without causing visible stress. Diurnal temperature variation in late August encouraged a favourable balance between sugar and acidity.
The grapes were picked on 24 and 25 September, showing concentration and finesse. Stable, warm conditions allowed Sangiovese to ripen without excessive concentration. Long maceration contributed to the vintage’s capacity to evolve, while its balance supports both early enjoyment and further ageing.
Label / history
Podernovi is San Polo’s cru from the vineyard of the same name. It debuted with the 2015 vintage.
