Vineyard and terroir
The Merlot comes from Farneta in Cortona, where vineyards at approximately 300 m above sea level occupy broad plateaus with mixed exposures. Compact, dense Pliocene clay soils contain iron oxide. This Cortona site is specifically assigned to In Violas.
Grapes
100% Merlot.
Ageing
The wine matures for approximately 16–18 months in French oak barriques.
Technical data
Annual production ranges from 12,000 to 18,000 bottles.
Label / history
The creation of the Cortona DOC in 1999, the recognition of the area’s suitability for international varieties and Poliziano’s relationship with the landowning Aliotti Tommasi family inspired the Cortona project. Convinced by the particular potential of Merlot grown in Cortona’s Pliocene clay, Poliziano began bottling In Violas in 2006. It is conceived as a Merlot with a Tuscan character.
