Vineyard and terroir
Vigneto Le Caggiole is a 14 ha vineyard at 350 m above sea level on the road from Montepulciano to Gracciano. Only part of the vineyard is currently in production. Its east-facing position, microclimate and geological profile differ markedly from nearby Asinone.
The vines are more than 40 years old. The soil is predominantly sandy and of Pliocene marine origin; the technical description defines it as marine-origin tuffaceous soil containing less than 15% clay. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare. Rootstocks, Sangiovese clones and planting layout were selected specifically for the site.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
Harvest takes place manually in crates with precise timing at peak phenolic ripeness to maximize aromatic expression. A second manual selection in the cellar retains only the best bunches. Fermentation and maceration take place in truncated-conical stainless-steel vats for 18–22 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for 16–18 months in 500–600 L French oak tonneaux.
Technical data
Average production is approximately 6,500 bottles. Cellaring potential exceeds 20 years.
Tasting profile
An elegant, refined expression of Sangiovese rather than a muscular one. The palate is refined and gently sweet-toned, with saline accents and very supple tannins. The sandy marine-origin soil contributes pronounced sapidity and intense elegance.
Label / history
The modern release began with the 2015 vintage, reviving a wine previously produced in 1988. Its return followed the study, care and replanting of the Le Caggiole vineyard.
