Vineyard and terroir

The wine draws on 58 ha of selected vineyards at elevations of 280–350 m, with varied exposures. The soils are clay and silt with a stony component, and planting density ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 vines per hectare. Vineyards are selected specifically to produce a youthful, fruity and full-bodied wine.

Grapes

80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand and subsequently sorted optically. Picking takes place approximately one week before the fruit destined for Vino Nobile, seeking suitable but less complex phenolic maturity. Fermentation and maceration last 10–12 days in truncated-conical stainless-steel vats at controlled temperature. Punch-downs are used alongside pump-overs.

Ageing

Maturation lasts approximately eight months. The technical sheet specifies 20% in French oak and 80% in concrete. It further explains that the Sangiovese portion remains in the fresher concrete environment while the Merlot component matures in barrique, contributing softness and fullness.

Technical data

Rosso di Montepulciano DOC. Average production is approximately 250,000 bottles, with an ageing potential of five to eight years.

Tasting profile

A youthful, fruit-driven and full-bodied red, combining freshness with a soft, ample palate.

Label / history

Rosso di Montepulciano obtained DOC status in 1989, also the first vintage identified for this wine. Although the denomination permits production by declassifying grapes registered for Vino Nobile, Poliziano instead designates vineyards specifically for Rosso di Montepulciano.
