Questo vino

Vineyard and terroir

Nebbiolo from Rocche dell’Annunziata in Annunziata di La Morra. A review of the 2010 vintage specifically associates the wine’s energy with calcareous soil.

Grapes

Nebbiolo.

Vinification

Estate grapes undergo temperature-controlled roto-maceration.

Ageing

The wine was reported as maturing for 24 months in barriques. The estate’s Barolo practice uses French oak barriques in variable proportions of new, once-used and twice-used wood, adjusted to the cru and structure of the wine. The 2010 vintage occupied four barriques: two new and two once-used.

Technical data

Production of the 2015 vintage was reduced to two barrels following the division of the estate.

Tasting profile

The 2001 showed brilliant ruby colour and a rich, complex nose of blackberry, plum, pepper and vanilla. Its tannins were prominent yet fresh and agreeable, with a full palate. The 2000 combined elegance and finesse with soft but present tannins and an exceptionally long finish. The 1999 offered red preserves and tobacco, a broad, mature palate and substantial length.

Later vintages varied markedly. The 2013 was medium-bodied and fresh, with rose petal, citrus rind, firm silky tannins and a subtle fruit finish. The 2012 was dense and full-bodied, combining dried berries, flowers and citrus peel with firm, velvety tannins and a long finish. The 2011 was ripe and rich, with spice, truffle and berries, a full body and chewy tannins. The 2010 showed strawberry and flowers with a crisp, lively palate and persistent finish; another review found cherry, liquorice, minerals and dried herbs, silky red-fruit intensity, fine tannins and a very long, juicy close. The 2009 was full-bodied and fruit-rich with firm tannins, berry and oak. The 2008 combined blueberry, milk chocolate and fresh herbs with a polished, silky texture. The 2007 was opulent, with ripe strawberry, milk chocolate, dried mushroom, velvety tannins and a long finish. The 2015 was especially dark and powerful.

Vintage notes

The published critical record spans 1999–2013 and 2015. Recommendations ranged from immediate drinking for the 2013 to four or five additional years for the firmer 2009 and 2011. The 2012 was considered suitable either for drinking or holding.
