Vineyard and terroir
Riecine di Riecine is sourced from Vigna Palmina in Gaiole in Chianti. Planted at 450–500 m above sea level on limestone and clay, the vineyard contains the estate’s oldest vines. They are 70 years old for the 2022 release, trained to Guyot and spurred cordon at a density of 4,500 vines per hectare. Yield is 35 q/ha. The vineyard has been managed organically under ICEA certification since 2006.
The fruit comes from the old vines that John Dunkley and Palmina Abbagnano encountered when they arrived in Tuscany.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2022): 100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The 2022 fruit was harvested by hand in September and October, with an initial selection in the vineyard followed by a second selection on a vibrating sorting table. Fermentation took place with whole grapes, including 30% undestemmed fruit, in non-vitrified Nomblot concrete tanks. Maceration lasted 25–40 days.
The broader production method describes gently placing the selected bunches on the vibrating table, destemming part of the crop and retaining part as whole bunches. The grapes undergo several days of dry-ice cryomaceration before fermentation develops over 15–20 days. After fermentation, the vessel is filled to limit oxidation and the wine remains on the skins for approximately another 30 days.
Ageing
For the 2022 release, maturation lasted 24 months in non-vitrified Nomblot concrete eggs, followed by six months in bottle.
A broader description of the wine’s production gives a longer sequence: 36 months in unlined Nomblot concrete eggs, three further months in unlined concrete tanks for tartaric stabilization and natural fining, and six months of bottle maturation in an area protected from sunlight and temperature fluctuations.
Technical data
The 2022 has 14.50% alcohol. It was bottled in December 2024. Production comprised 3,540 bottles of 750 ml and 30 magnums of 1.5 L.
Lightweight glass bottles are used. Capsules and labels are recyclable and regenerable Polynatures materials compliant with EU Directive 94/62/EC and certified as recyclable polylaminate. Packaging and transport cartons are PEFC-certified recycled and recyclable paper, printed with biodegradable inks.
