Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from Vigna Vecchia and Vigna Eucalipti at Gavorrano in the province of Grosseto. The vineyards lie at 90 m a.s.l.; vines are trained to spurred cordon at 5,900 plants per hectare and yield 55 q/ha. Merlot is picked in late August, while Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon are harvested in mid-September. The wine page describes clay-rich, stony soil; the technical sheet describes a medium-textured soil rich in stones.
Grapes
60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.
Vinification
Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation is completed.
Ageing
Fourteen months in barriques, 80% of them new, are followed by 11 months in bottle.
Technical data
Maremma Toscana DOC. First vintage: 2013. Available formats are 1.5 L, 3 L and 6 L.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with garnet reflections. Strength and intensity are balanced by elegance, with soft tannins giving a rounded mouthfeel. The nose is fruity with pleasant spice; the palate is deep, lively and well balanced.
Serving and pairing
Pairs with red meats, roasts, game and mature cheeses.
Label / history
This limited edition of Rocca di Frassinello’s first label commemorates two anniversaries: ten years since the inauguration of Renzo Piano’s winery in 2007 and forty years since the 1977 opening of Paris’s Beaubourg Museum, another of the architect’s works.
