Vineyard and terroir
The Lagrein vines grow at 120–150 metres above sea level within the ancient walls of the monastery. The vineyards have south-west to north-west exposures and light, sandy soils. The vines range from 5 to 20 years old and are trained on the simple Trentino pergola system at a density of 2,500 vines per hectare. Yields are 80–90 quintals per hectare (8–9 tonnes per hectare).
Grapes
Lagrein.
Vinification
The grapes undergo soft pressing with minimal skin contact. Fermentation follows the white-wine method and lasts 10 days at controlled temperature.
Ageing
The wine matures in stainless steel for six months.
Tasting profile
Pale onion-skin in colour. Aromas evoke small red fruits and rose. The palate is fresh and elegant, with satisfying drinkability and a savoury character associated with the vineyard soils.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 10–12 °C.
Label / history
Gemma di San Leonardo was created in tribute to Gemma de Gresti, owner of the estate in the early twentieth century. Remembered as a courageous and strong-willed figure, she saved numerous lives during the First World War. The wine reflects that inspiration through a combination of elegance, character and freshness.
