Vineyard and terroir

The Riserva is made only in the finest vintages. Its south-facing vineyard lies at 450 m on heterogeneous terrain dominated by sandy loam and volcanic material, crossed by veins of marl. The site gives the wine depth, structure and marked minerality.

Grapes

100% estate-grown, organically certified Sangiovese.

Vinification

Native yeasts initiate spontaneous fermentation in 35 hl tronconic oak vats. The 2019 underwent three days of pre-fermentation cold maceration and a further 42 days of skin contact after fermentation.

Ageing

The wine spent six months on its lees with bâtonnage in French barriques, then matured for four years in large Slavonian and French oak barrels.

Technical data

The 2019 has 14.5% alcohol; production totalled 3,800 bottles.

Tasting profile

The 2019 combines orange peel, peach, raspberry and cranberry with crushed strawberry, mint, rhubarb, cedar, leather and flinty mineral notes. The palate is poised and medium-bodied, with silky, fine-grained tannins, vivid acidity and a dry, exceptionally long finish. Further published impressions add dog rose, eucalyptus, juniper, pipe tobacco, pomegranate, star anise and cinnamon. Its character is deep, resonant and powerful while retaining elegance and freshness.

Vintage notes

A relatively rainy spring in 2019 restored moisture and vigour after the preceding dry year, requiring careful canopy and ecosystem management. August was hot without the extreme peaks of earlier years, and the grapes ripened steadily until an October harvest of healthy, balanced fruit.
