Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from vineyards around Girlan and Schreckbichl, which are known for low yields and natural cultivation methods. The vineyards lie at 350–400 m above sea level on sandy, gravelly soils rich in limestone. The climate is cool, with a strong contrast between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
Vinification
After harvest the grapes ferment for 16–18 days in stainless steel tanks at 18 °C.
Ageing
The wine spends several months on the lees before bottling.
Label / history
The Colterenzio cooperative takes its name from the village of Colterenzio, near Girlan, where one of Europe's oldest vineyards, planted by the ancient Romans, is located. It was founded in 1960, when 28 local farmers decided to join forces. Today it brings together more than 290 winegrowers who own around 300 ha of vineyards. Archduke Sigismund, who lived at Firmiano Castle in the 15th century, enjoyed the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige, and evidence of winemaking in the area goes back further still, to Roman times. The producers believe such a long tradition brings responsibilities, including the need to make bold decisions.
The labels of Colterenzio wines show the silhouette of a castle built in the 15th century by Archduke Sigismund, a wine lover who actively supported the development of the area's vineyards. The castle is now almost completely ruined.
