Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards of Cornaiano occupy gentle hills formed by glaciers moving through the Adige Valley during the Ice Age. Within the Cornell range, each variety is planted on the site considered best suited to it.
Label / history
Formigar takes its name from an old castle in South Tyrol. In the 15th century, Archbishop Sigismund built a large castle in what is now the municipality of Colterenzio. Although it is now almost entirely ruined, the castle is commemorated on Colterenzio’s labels. Sigismund valued the wines of Cornaiano and supported the development of its vineyards.
Cornell is Colterenzio’s range of single-variety wines from specific vineyards, made in a modern international style. According to legend, after Roman troops occupied the area in 15 BC, a citizen named Cornelius established the Cornelianum winery; this is presented as the origin of both the village’s name and that of the Cornell range.
