Vineyard and terroir
Keyhole Ranch is an estate vineyard in the Russian River Valley, Sonoma County. Formerly planted predominantly to white varieties, the site now supports Zinfandel in a cool microclimate moderated by coastal breezes and frequent summer-morning fog. These conditions shape a spicy, vibrant expression with blackberry and briary qualities.
Grapes
100% Zinfandel.
Vinification
The grapes were picked by hand and sorted for uniform ripeness, then lightly crushed and fermented in small open-top stainless-steel tanks. Pneumatic punch-downs promoted extraction, while pump-overs provided gentle aeration. After 8–12 days on the skins, the free-run wine was drained to barrel to complete alcoholic fermentation and malolactic conversion.
Ageing
The wine remained in barrel for 10 months before blending and was then returned to barrel for another five months. Total maturation was 15 months, using 12% new French oak, including a 20% François Frères component, with the balance in neutral oak.
Technical data
Alcohol is reported as 14.5% on the wine page and 15.5% in the 2022 technical sheet. pH: 3.54. Titratable acidity: 6.3 g/L. Production: 1,168 cases.
Tasting profile
Vanilla, plum, baking spice, and heather form a layered aromatic profile. Briary red raspberry defines the palate, which is juicy, supple, and vibrant. The cool-site character also brings spicy blackberry and briary nuances.
Serving and pairing
Pair with grilled leg of lamb or cannellini-bean cassoulet prepared with fennel sausage, pancetta, and smoked pork shanks.
Vintage notes
The 2022 season opened with substantially below-average winter rainfall and a frost period extending into late April, although the estate vineyards largely escaped damage. Cooler weather in May and June returned development closer to average and delayed véraison and anticipated picking dates. July and August were considerably warmer, with some sunburn from exposure. Harvest began in late August, and temperatures during Labor Day week exceeded 47.8°C in northern Alexander Valley and reached approximately 46.1°C in the Santa Rosa High Plains, accelerating ripening and contributing to one of the estate's fastest harvests. Keyhole Ranch fruit was picked from September 10 through October 4, 2022.
