Storia

Erika’s dream

Tenuta Sette Cieli originated in Erika’s ambition to explore a wild landscape and turn its character into wine. The project was conceived around a commitment to producing an ideal wine while respecting nature.

2001: the first vineyards

The estate’s journey began in 2001 with the planting of its first vineyards at approximately 400 metres above sea level, on the hills above Bolgheri. The chosen setting combined terraced slopes overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea with the surrounding woods of Monteverdi Marittimo.

The property developed into an 80-hectare estate, including 10 hectares of vineyards. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec were planted at high density on terraces divided by dry-stone walls.

Erika’s legacy

Erika’s project became a family heritage carried forward by her children, Ambrogio and Acqua. Its continuing purpose is to safeguard the estate and translate the landscape’s character into wine while preserving the environmental values on which the project was founded.

Terroir

Tenuta Sette Cieli occupies hilltop terrain on the Tuscan coast between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci. Its principal vineyards stand at approximately 400 metres above sea level and look across terraced slopes toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. Dense woods around Monteverdi Marittimo frame the estate.

The property overlooks the landscape described as the Anfiteatro Bolgherese: gently descending hills that embrace the sea. This topography contributes to a mild, temperate microclimate. Ventilation and pronounced temperature variations are defining features of the site.

The soils are moderately textured and relatively low in vigour, with a dominant stony fraction integrating sand, silt and clay. The interaction between these soils and the ventilated microclimate supports even, complete grape maturation.

Vinificazione

Parcel-by-parcel vinificationEvery parcel and grape variety is vinified separately before final selection.
Spontaneous fermentationFermentation begins with indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grape skins.
Temperature-controlled steelFermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks under controlled temperatures, followed by complete malolactic fermentation.
Cold macerationSelected lots undergo cold maceration with dry ice for two to seven days.
French-oak maturationWines mature in small French-oak barrels, with final selection made after barrel ageing.
Manual harvestGrapes are harvested by hand, with selection incorporated into the picking process.

The vineyards are cultivated organically as part of an environmental approach that treats ecological protection and wine quality as inseparable. Every vineyard operation is performed by hand with close attention to detail.

The principal hill vineyards are densely planted at 9,300 vines per hectare, while the sea-level Bolgheri vineyard is planted at 6,900 vines per hectare. The technical material records manual harvesting throughout the range, with grape selection applied before or during picking. For parts of the production, harvest takes place between late September and mid-October.

Winemaking continues the parcel-focused work begun in the vineyard. Each parcel and grape variety is vinified separately, preserving the ability to evaluate individual components before the final selection.

Fermentations take place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grape skins. The technical material further identifies temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and complete malolactic fermentation as shared elements of production. Depending on the lot, cold maceration with dry ice lasts between two and seven days.

Maturation takes place in small French-oak barrels. Across the portfolio, the stated periods range from nine to 24 months. Final wine selection is postponed until after barrel maturation, allowing the cellar team to assess the separately vinified components only after their development in oak.

Filosofia

Tenuta Sette Cieli defines its purpose as transforming the commitment, tenacity and strength of its territory into wine while respecting nature and the values behind the project. The estate presents respect for the environment not as a separate initiative but as an indispensable part of quality.

Its working philosophy combines intensive manual care in the vineyards with restrained, component-based cellar work. Separate vinification by parcel and variety, spontaneous fermentation and selection only after barrel maturation are intended to preserve the distinctions created in the vineyard.

The estate associates great wine directly with great terroir. Its objective is therefore not to erase vintage or site differences, but to retain their identifying traits while pursuing balance, complete ripening, personality and character.
