Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown in southern Sicily, on stony volcanic soils rich in minerals that suit the variety. Nerello Mascalese is a native, late-ripening variety. Sicily's climate is classic Mediterranean, with constant sunshine and moderate rainfall that keep rot and mold from developing on the grapes. Coastal breezes soften temperature swings and ventilate the vineyards, helping the fruit ripen well. The text states that viticulture in Sicily is organic only, without chemicals or herbicides. Mount Etna and the mountainous volcanic slopes have produced a distinctive dark soil, exceptionally rich in minerals and mineral deposits.
