Vineyard and terroir

The Vermentino comes from Loc. Montebottigli in the municipality of Grosseto. The vineyard lies at 90 m a.s.l. with south–southwest exposure. Its medium-textured soil is predominantly sandstone and contains abundant stones. Vines are Guyot-trained at 6,600 plants per hectare.

Grapes

100% Vermentino, combining two Corsican clones with two Sardinian clones.

Vinification

The 2024 grapes were harvested by hand on 20 September. Half of the wine remained in contact with the skins for five months, predominantly in amphora. Forty percent was handled in steel on the lees with weekly bâtonnage. The remaining 10% was vinified and matured in barriques for nine months overall.

Ageing

The élevage combines amphora, lees ageing in steel with weekly bâtonnage, and a smaller barrique component. The wine was bottled in December 2025 and scheduled for release in May 2026.

Technical data

The 2024 has 12.59% alcohol and total acidity of 5.29%. Production was 21,500 bottles, in 750 ml and 1.5 L formats. The first vintage was 2011.

Tasting profile

A sunlit, intensely savoury and mineral Vermentino with a muscular but pleasing structure. Its combination of depth and freshness supports extended ageing.

Serving and pairing

It need not be served particularly cold and has enough structure for dishes more commonly paired with red wine. Suitable matches include flavourful fish, savoury white meats, creamy risottos and porcini mushrooms.

Vintage notes

The project began with agronomic and oenological research into Vermentino at Belguardo in 2008. Beginning with the 2021 harvest, the former Codice V became Belguardo V Maremma Toscana DOC Vermentino Superiore. In 2024, a mild winter and rainy winter and spring replenished water reserves. Hot, dry weather from the second week of July accelerated berry growth and véraison; August ripening was slow and steady, with two beneficial rain events on 18–19 August totalling 52 mm. The estate harvest ran from 21 August to 15 October.
