Vineyard and terroir
The Susumaniello comes from a 10 ha vineyard at Tenuta Castel Serranova in Carovigno, in the province of Brindisi. Rows run north–south on limestone-and-clay soil. The vines are trained to a bilateral spurred cordon and average 2.0 kg of grapes per plant.
Grapes
100% Susumaniello.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-picked into crates during the second ten days of September. Following destemming and crushing, the must receives a short pre-fermentation cryomaceration and is then gently pressed. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature in thermoregulated stainless-steel tanks for 20 days. The traditional static-draining technique shapes the wine's delicate red-berry character. Cold static stabilization and microfiltration precede bottling.
Ageing
The wine matures on its fine lees in stainless steel for 3–5 months, followed by two months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Bright, pale pink. The nose is intense and persistent, with raspberry, redcurrant and blackberry. The palate is fresh and savoury, with a soft, elegant texture, firm structure and a long, pleasant finish.
Serving and pairing
Pair with spaghettoni, mussels and sautéed cherry tomatoes.
Label / history
Tenuta Castel Serranova has passed through the hands of prominent historical owners, including Raimondo del Balzo Orsini, Prince of Taranto, from 1382 to 1407, and Maria d’Enghien, Countess of Lecce, from 1407 to 1464. The estate combines this historic setting with the red soils and natural landscape surrounding Castello di Serranova.
