Vineyard and terroir
Castel Serranova is a cru from Vigna Castello at Tenuta Castel Serranova in Carovigno, Brindisi. Dry-stone walls enclose the vineyard, marking its boundary with the surrounding Torre Guaceto nature reserve. The vines cover 22 hectares on limestone-clay soil, with north–south row orientation and bilateral spurred-cordon training. Average production is 1.2 kg per vine.
The wider Castel Serranova estate extends from the promontory occupied by the fortified Castello di Serranova to the Adriatic Sea. Recovery work on Susumaniello began here in 1998.
Grapes
70% Negroamaro and 30% Susumaniello.
Vinification
Negroamaro is harvested at the end of September and Susumaniello during the first ten days of October. Both varieties are picked by hand into crates. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation and maceration take place under temperature control in thermoregulated stainless-steel tanks for 20 days.
Ageing
The varieties mature separately. Negroamaro spends 12 months in Allier oak tonneaux, while Susumaniello rests in concrete; malolactic fermentation occurs during this period. Once assembled, the blend matures in concrete until bottling, followed by six months of bottle ageing.
Tasting profile
The colour is deep ruby with pronounced violet reflections. The complex, intense and persistent aroma combines ripe cherry, blackberry and redcurrant with spices and balsamic nuances. Leather, spice and Mediterranean scrub also define its aromatic character. The palate is harmonious, full and substantial, with a firmly structured body and a dense, silky tannic weave.
Label / history
The wine reflects the history of Castel Serranova, whose former owners included Raimondo del Balzo Orsini, Prince of Taranto, from 1382 to 1407, and Queen Maria d’Enghien, Countess of Lecce, from 1407 to 1464. The fortified farmhouse grew around a defensive tower built in 1350. The Tenuta Serranova collection is dedicated to this estate, with Castel Serranova as its reference red wine.
