Vineyard and terroir
Costa Bruna is a 2 ha Barbera vineyard located within the Roncaglie cru in Barbaresco. It was discovered when the Colla family acquired Roncaglie. The site combines Barbera’s freshness and drinkability with the elegance associated with the marl soils of the Langhe.
The vineyard contains plantings from 1930, 1995 and 2005. Documentary evidence establishes that its oldest vines are at least 90 years old, although they may be older.
Grapes
100% Barbera.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and crushed. Maceration and fermentation with the skins last 10–12 days, with a maximum temperature of 28–30°C. Malolactic fermentation is completed before winter.
Ageing
Approximately one year in oak casks.
Technical data
- Alcohol: 13–14% vol.
- Total acidity: 5.5–6 g/L
- Dry extract: 27–29 g/L
Tasting profile
Violet-purple red. The vinous, complex aroma combines wild strawberries and cherries with floral and spicy notes. The palate is full-bodied and driven by fresh acidity. It can be enjoyed young as well as at maturity.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 15–17°C in a fairly large, tapered glass. A versatile wine for the whole meal, it pairs with pasta, soups and savoury flans. It can also accompany sauces and braised meat dishes.
Label / history
The Colla family encountered Costa Bruna almost by chance after purchasing the Roncaglie cru in Barbaresco: an old Barbera vineyard hidden within the larger property. It is described as “the lady of Roncaglie.”
