Storia
Entry into Bacci Wines
Terre Darrigo became part of the Bacci Wines portfolio through a recent acquisition. The estate occupies the historic contrada D'Arrigo in the municipality of Linguaglossa, on the slopes of Mount Etna.
A landscape shaped over centuries
The estate's vineyards stand on traditional lava-stone terraces built by hand over the centuries. These structures embody the historical relationship between local viticulture, the volcanic landscape and the culture of the Etna area.
Terroir
Position and elevation
Terre Darrigo lies in the historic contrada D'Arrigo within the municipality of Linguaglossa, at the foot of Mount Etna. Its vineyards occupy elevations of 650–700 m above sea level. The site looks toward the sea at Taormina in one direction and the summit of Etna in the other, placing the vineyards between the maritime outlook and the volcano.
Volcanic ground
The Etna DOC vineyards grow in black volcanic ground rich in ancient lava deposited by past eruptions. The estate associates the character of its wines with this singular volcanic substrate.
Terraced landscape
Traditional lava-stone terraces, constructed by hand over centuries, structure the vineyard landscape. Beyond their physical presence, the terraces preserve a visible connection with the history and culture of the Etna area.
Vinificazione
The estate's current wines are identified as organic. Viticulture takes place on historic lava-stone terraces at 650–700 m, where Nerello Mascalese is the principal red grape, Nerello Cappuccio forms a smaller component of the red plantings, and Carricante supplies the white production.
Stainless steel is used for the vinification or maturation of the estate's Carricante-based Etna Bianco, Nerello Mascalese-based Etna Rosato and Contrada DArrigo red. The Etna Rosso is also identified as an organic estate wine, but its cellar regime is not described.
Filosofia
Terre Darrigo's identity is centred on the relationship between native Etna varieties and volcanic ground. Its red vineyards are led by Nerello Mascalese with a smaller presence of Nerello Cappuccio, while Carricante represents the white plantings. The estate presents this combination of grapes, ancient lava-derived soils and historic stone terraces as the basis for wines intended to express their place of origin. The terraces also embody continuity with the history and culture of the Etna landscape.
